A message to High School Juniors

Dear high school Juniors,
Needless to say, your college application process will be different than other years.  Since standardized tests have been cancelled this spring and there is uncertainty about summer and fall test dates, you will need to find other ways to demonstrate your academic strengths.  Now, more than ever, character and the positive impact you have on those around you will be paramount.  Trust me, character counts!  As an example of this, take a look at the recent message that Harvard sent to future applicants.  Take a look at the important factors they consider besides grades and test scores: Growth and Potential, Interests and Activities, Personal Character and Contributions to your Community.
Here are some suggestions of steps you can take today to help you as you complete your applications this coming summer.
  • Find genuine ways to help your family, friends and neighbors during this "stay-at-home" period and beyond.
  • Make the effort to stretch your academic curiosity.  Read those interesting books that you didn't have time for before.  Offer your teachers some help with compiling new information for your fellow students.
  • Are you an aspiring writer or filmmaker?  Now is that time to make that original piece you have been thinking about.
  • Visual artist?  Start compiling your artistic portfolio now, so you have it ready to submit in early fall.
  • Rather than playing a ton of video games, find a new hobby or area of interest you would like to explore.
  • Stay in contact with your teachers and counselors at school.  Strong letters of recommendation will be more important than ever.
If you would like some help brainstorming more ideas, or would like to get started on preparing your college applications, reach out to me.  There is no better time than now!

All my best wishes to you and your family.
Be Well, Be Kind,
Cathy Falkenberg
